Why wait up when you can just go by yourself?!
More than ever, women are taking off on solo adventures to scratch that travel itch even when no one else is willing to go. Ask anyone who has traveled solo themselves and they will probably praise their experience and encourage you to go on a solo trip yourself!
If you've been thinking of taking off on your own solo adventure, there's no better time than NOW! March 1, 2022 is National Plan a Solo Vacation Day!
Here are 5 Tips for Traveling Solo in 2022 and beyond:
1. Go with a tour group so you don't feel so solo
Traveling solo doesn't have to mean traveling alone! Find a group tour company that aligns with your travel goals and preferences, and you'll instantly connect with others in the group over your desire to visit the same places, experience the same things, indulge in the same exotic foods, and more! Odds are, you'll not only get to cross another destination off your bucket list, but you'll also make some lifelong friends at the same time.
Origin Travels is a women-owned tour company that offers intimate and authentic adventures to some amazing destinations such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Kenya, and the Canadian Rockies. Use code SPLICE5 for 5% off any of their trips!
2. Let someone know where you're heading and what your plans are
Don't keep your plans a secret! For safety reasons, let someone who cares about you know where you're going at all times. This can be a family member or friend back home or your home government. For United States citizens, you can keep your whereabouts updated with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (a.k.a STEP) so the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate knows where you are.
3. Make friends by going to social hot spots
Places like hostels, coffee shops, bars, sporting events, etc. are all great places for meeting likeminded people when you're traveling, especially other solo travelers! Spark up a conversation, ask for suggestions of places to check out in the area, share your opinion and experiences of the city or country so far. Make plans to meet up for coffee one morning or go to the activity you've realized you both planned to see while you're there. Just because you didn't bring a friend from home with you doesn't mean you won't leave without one (or a few)!
4. Ask locals for advice
Who knows a place better than the people who live there? No one! Many locals will be enthusiastic about sharing their best tips and hidden gems within their city if you ask them. Get recommendations on what to do, what to eat, where to go (and where to avoid), and maybe even where to head next that's a little off the beaten path, but oh so worth it. You'd be surprised how much more helpful this is than relying solely on guide books, blogs, and Google maps!
5. Leave some room for spontaneity and flexibility
Don't pre-plan everything down to the minute - leave some room to get lost, discover sites you didn't know existed, and to explore the spots that were recommended to you by locals. You never know what you'll find. Use precaution but enjoy your solo adventure and just live. Soak it all in. Take your time and embrace this experience to the fullest.
Traveling solo can be an extremely rewarding experience. Just make sure you're taking the proper precautions for your safety. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!
